Importing Used Clothing From the United States: Documents, Terms and Timelines

Container of baled wholesale used clothing loaded on a truck for export from Houston, Texas

Importing used clothing from the United States follows seven clear steps, and a first-time buyer can follow them with confidence. This guide walks through each step, the three core documents, and a realistic timeline from your first message to a loaded container.

Step 1: Tell us what you need

Send your destination country, product, grade and volume through the inquiry form or on WhatsApp. The more you tell us about your market, the better we can build your load.

Step 2: Receive a written quotation

Your quote sets out the price per pound or per bale, the total weight, the terms and an estimate of ocean freight to your port. You receive it within one business day. All prices are in US dollars.

Step 3: Inspect, then pay

Before you pay, you see photographs and video of the actual goods, or visit our Houston warehouse. Payment is 50% in advance to start processing, with the balance at the time of loading. We accept ACH and wire transfers on all orders.

Step 4: Processing and loading

Allow 5 to 7 business days from cleared payment to loading. We load, photograph and seal the container.

Step 5: Documents

We send the three core documents for your shipment:

  • Commercial invoice: the sale, with the price, quantity and description of goods. Customs uses it to value the shipment.
  • Packing list: how many bales, what weight and how they are packed.
  • Bill of lading: the carrier's receipt and contract. It tells the shipping line who owns the cargo and where it is going.

Your customs broker or clearing agent will confirm anything else your country requires at your end.

Step 6: Freight

You can book freight with your own forwarder, or we can handle freight for you. Where we handle it, we ask for full freight payment before the container is released in your name.

Step 7: Arrival and clearance

Your clearing agent handles customs at your port, the container is trucked to your warehouse, and your first bale is opened. Ocean transit times depend on the route and the carrier, and your forwarder can confirm them when you book.

A realistic timeline

  1. Day 0: you send your product, grade and volume.
  2. Within one business day: written quotation.
  3. Your choice: inspect photographs and video, or visit Houston.
  4. Cleared payment: 50% advance received.
  5. 5 to 7 business days: processing and loading.
  6. At loading: balance due, documents issued.
  7. Ocean transit and clearance: depends on your destination.

Check your country's import rules early

Markets treat used clothing differently, and rules can change. A short conversation with your customs broker before you order gives you a clear picture of the permits, inspections and duties for your country, so your container clears smoothly. Our country pages list the main ports we ship to, and we are happy to talk through your route.
