What Is Credential Clothing? A Buyer's Guide to Original Grade

Credential used clothing bale, the original unsorted grade, ready for wholesale export from Houston

Credential clothing is used clothing baled exactly as it was collected, with nothing taken out and nothing added. The trade also calls it original clothing or original grade, and it is the starting point for every other grade of used clothing.

For a buyer, that makes it the most open-ended product we sell. You receive the whole collection, and you decide what each piece is worth in your market.

What is inside a credential bale

A credential bale holds the full mix of what was collected: men's, women's and children's clothing, across sizes, styles and seasons. Nobody has picked out the best pieces first. Some bales open to a run of excellent everyday wear, others to a surprising number of premium brands, and the variety is exactly where the opportunity sits.

Because the bale is closed at the source, you know where the goods started. It is the same clothing a sorter in the United States would see on day one.

Why buyers choose credential clothing

  • You keep the sorting margin. The pieces that earn premium prices are yours to pick out and sell at the top of your market.
  • It suits your own sorting team. If you already run a sorting yard or market stall, credential lets your staff do the grading with your customers in mind.
  • It fits re-export. Sorters in many countries buy credential bales, sort them locally and sell on by grade to other dealers.
  • The terms are clear. Credential means unsorted. What you see described is what is in the bale.

Who it suits best

Credential works well for sorting yards, market traders with space to open and sort bales, and wholesalers who sell on to smaller dealers. In many markets buyers ask for it by name: ropa credencial in Spanish and vêtements crédentiels in French.

How to get the most from a credential bale

  1. Open bales in a clean, bright space so every garment can be seen and handled.
  2. Sort into four piles: premium, good, everyday and lower value.
  3. Price each pile for your own customers, and put the premium pile in front first.
  4. Keep simple notes per bale: date opened, hours to sort, how many pieces in each pile.
  5. Track your yield. After five or six bales you will know what a typical bale earns, and you can plan each container with confidence.

How credential compares with the other grades

Sorted item clothing has already been separated by garment type, so you can sell it straight from the bale. Institutional clothing has been through one round of US thrift retail. Credential is the raw material for both ideas. Our guide to choosing between credential, institutional and sorted grades shows how to match each grade to your market.
