Friperie and Fripe: Importing Used Clothing to West and North Africa

Bales of friperie, wholesale used clothing ready for export to West and North Africa

In West and North Africa, used clothing is friperie or fripe, and the trade is built on well-run ports, skilled sorters and fast-moving markets. This guide explains the vocabulary, the grades buyers choose, and how a container travels from Houston to your port.

The words buyers use

  • Friperie is the trade and the clothing. Fripe is the short form, common in Morocco and Tunisia.
  • Balles de friperie are bales of used clothing.
  • Vêtements crédentiels are unsorted, original-grade clothing, and vêtements triés are sorted clothing.
  • Chaussures de friperie and chaussures d'occasion are used shoes.
  • Friperie en gros means wholesale used clothing.

Port cities that move the trade

West African ports do more than serve their own cities. Lomé is a deep-water port and a hub for friperie moving north toward the Sahel. Cotonou has long been the gateway to Niger and northern Nigeria. Abidjan serves wholesalers in Abidjan, Bouaké and Yamoussoukro. Dakar opens the way to Mali and Mauritania, and Douala serves Cameroon as well as Chad and the Central African Republic. In the north, Casablanca, Tanger Med and Radès link the Maghreb to established sorting and re-export businesses.

Two ways to buy

  1. Crédentiel for sorters. In Morocco and Tunisia, professional sorting centers buy credential clothing in volume, grade it, and sell on to wholesalers.
  2. Trié for shops and market traders. In Abidjan, Dakar, Lomé and Cotonou, many wholesalers choose sorted Grade A friperie that is ready to sell.

Some buyers do both: credential for their own sorters and sorted item bales for their best customers.

What sells well

  • Everyday wear in good condition for family markets.
  • Sorted Grade A for boutiques and stalls with loyal customers.
  • Children's wear and T-shirts, which move quickly in most markets.
  • Used shoes, paired and banded for retail, or credential for local sorting.

Shoes in your container

Chaussures de friperie travel in the same container as the bales. Sorted shoes come paired and banded in 50 lb bags or capsacks, and credential shoes ship as collected, so you can match the pack to your sorting capacity.

Planning your container

A 40 ft high-cube holds about 40 bales of used clothing at roughly 40,000 lbs. We will build the container around your market and your port, and our country pages list the main ports we ship to.

Before you order

Each country sets its own import rules for used clothing, and they can change. Confirm your country's current requirements with your clearing agent before you order, so your container clears smoothly. We are glad to talk through documents and routing with you.
